Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later. Henry Inch Cowan was born on October 20, 1846, to Irish immigrants Henry Cowan and Catherine Benning. He enlisted to fight in the Civil War, was imprisoned in a hospital captured by Confederates, and served as a scout toward the end of the war. After formal discharge from service, Henry Inch Cowan worked as a commission merchant and volunteer firefighter. He moved to New Orleans, where he died of yellow fever on September 21, 1867.
